What We Do

SVEL is introducing solar energy/photovoltaic education program to high
schools.

Mission Statement

To get middle and high school students interested in photovoltaic by providing
them education training that is fun, exciting, hands-on and focuses on
engineering.

Team

V. Shekhar: Founder of SVEL.
Veenu's passion for teaching school kids started with his volunteer work at
local primary school in Santa Clara, California with Reading Partners to
improve English comprehension of students in educationally-disadvantaged
schools.  It impressed upon him that students' English comprehension can be
improved by systematic and disciplined approach.  At that point he knew, that if
students' English comprehension can be improved, so can be their
understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
related subjects and in particular Photovoltaics.

Over the last ten months, Veenu has spent time understanding the challenges
faced by school districts, high school teachers and students so that he could
build a program that would be permanently established in high schools on a
sustained basis.  He has also studied the solar energy industry during this
time to get the correct tools that could be integrated in the tool set to deliver
cost-effective solutions to high schools.

Veenu has over 16 years of experience in the semiconductor industry in the
device design, processing and foundry interface fields in Silicon Valley.  Veenu
holds M.S. degree in electrical engineering from ASU with emphasis on solar
cells.

Kelly VanDussen, curriculum developer
Kelly Van Dusen graduated from Florida State University in 1986 with a B.S. in
Physics. She worked at Fermi National Laboratory for two semesters with the
High Energy Physics Group while earning her degree. She returned to FSU
and earned a B.S. in Science Education in 1987. She spent 13 years teaching
Physics to middle and high school students as well as Chemistry, Astronomy,
General and Physical Science.
For the past 9 years Kelly has been a program coordinator for the National
Energy Foundation (NEF), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to
cultivate and promote an energy literate society. She has helped to coordinate
the Academy of Energy Education for Brevard County Public Schools teaching
students, teachers, and administration about energy efficiency. She also
coordinated several energy efficiency programs throughout the southeast
United States in North and South Carolina, and Alabama. Kelly is a program
director now with several programs to oversee in Indiana, Ohio and
Pennsylvania. She is also helping with on-going revisions of curriculum
material at NEF and with development of new posters on Solar Energy, Wind
Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Dr. Karl Knapp, Advisor
Dr. Knapp is the Director of Sustainable Energy Education at MAP and a
Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford
university.  Dr. Knapp has over 25 years experience in the renewable energy
industry at Palo Alto Utilities and Arco Solar/Siemens Solar.

Dr. Campbell Scott, Content provider, solar cell chapters
Dr. Scott is at IBM San Jose Research Laboratory (Almaden Research Center).
He was an Assistant Professor of Physics at Cornell University.

Julia Hamm, Advisor
Julia Hamm is the president and CEO of the Solar Electric Power Association
(SEPA), a national non-profit that helps its utility members make smart solar
decisions. Julia has strong relationships with individuals at utilities and solar
companies worldwide, and is knowledgeable about solar programs, policies,
barriers, and trends. She is a frequent speaker at regional, national and
international conferences and has authored numerous articles on solar trends
and utility solar programs. Prior to leading SEPA, Julia worked as a senior
associate at ICF International where she supported the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency with implementation of its ENERGY STAR program. In 2007
she was named one of the Top 10 Women in Cleantech by earth2tech, and
she holds a Bachelors of Science in Business Management from Cornell
University. She lives with her husband and son in a PV-powered energy
efficient home that is certified by the Arlington County Green Home Choice
Program in Northern Virginia.
